In March 2002 a group of African theologians, all women, met with Margaret Farley, RSM, at the Yale School of Divinity to discuss the suffering caused by the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Africa. They concluded that there was a need for women to gather in Africa in order to shatter the silence of shame that surrounds the pandemic.
The All-Africa Conference: Sister to Sister has its origins as a response to the needs expressed by those African women. After this meeting in 2002, Sisters of Mercy initiated the AACSS, aiming to bring women religious from around the world to stand in solidarity with African Sisters who would guide the work of the AACSS in response to HIV and AIDS within the Sub-Sahara. |
