Response of Local Sisters

Sisters are well into the work of sensitizing women in religious congregations regarding the need to learn more about HIV and AIDS issues and have begun a process to empower themselves to more effectively address those issues.

Sisters from Malawi and Zambia offered a joint AACSS conference in Lusaka , Zambia, from 25 September to 3 October 2008. Sisters from both countries are continuing to offer an on-going series of workshops regarding HIV and AIDS issues.

The two national AACSS conferences offered in Nigeria touched local Sisters profoundly. The bonding created among the Sisters during the Conferences enabled them to speak about concerns and issues that they had wanted to address for a very long time.

As a result of recommendations from these conferences an AACSS conference for religious Superiors was held from 23 to 26 January 2009.

Moreover, Nigerian Sisters have also begun to train teams of local Sisters who have participated in AACSS conferences in order that they can continue the AACSS outreach to people living in rural areas.
